Slipped Disc? How do you know if you have one?
Are you experiencing lower back or leg pain? Have you had shooting pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs? Does your knee ever buckle or give way when you walk? Commonly known as a “herniated” or “slipped” disc, this often disabling condition is more common than you might think. That’s because what is essentially a neck or a lower back problem often shows up without any lower back pain or symptoms.
In fact, the majority of people with an active herniated disc have no low back discomfort whatsoever. More often than not, all of their symptoms show up in one of the arms or legs.
What are the causes of a Slipped Disc or Herniated Disc?
There’s high probability you have a slipped disc if you suffer from any of the following signs and symptoms:
- Severe back pain
- Shooting or burning pain into one leg, hip, or buttock
- Tingling, numbness, weakness in one leg or foot
When dealing with a slipped disc in the neck area, one tends to suffer with:
- Severe neck pain
- Shooting or burning pain in neck, shoulder, or arm
- Tingling, numbness, weakness in one shoulder or arm
The symptoms of a disc problem usually worsen with prolonged sitting or standing, with coughing, sneezing or laughing, and, in many cases, with bending backwards.
What is the best treatment for a Slipped Disc/ Spinal Disc Herniation?
The key is simply to get your body moving better, taking the pressure of your nerves and to eliminate bad postural habits that are contributing to the pain.
Many people think they will need surgery, but most of the time that is not necessary if you have a good Chiropractor. We are able to gently move your spine to move the slipped disc away from the nerve and thus get immediate pain relief.
Our patients often report a significant drop of pain, even just after the first visit. It will take more than one visit to solve the problem, but it is a good start. They also report to be able to walk for longer periods of time, sleep better, get up from a chair without pain and sleep through the night.
Most of the time Slipped discs can be cured naturally if treated early enough, so schedule yourself your first appointment right now and we will help you with the rest!
